Closed for Maintenance – á fimta sinni

Closed for maintenance (english subtitles)
25-04-2024

The upkeep of the stunning and historic sites in the Faroe Islands require regular maintenance. To ensure that these sites remain in their best condition, a weekend has been set aside for maintenance work - an initiative called "Closed for Maintenance".

Foreign tourists are coming to the Faroe Islands in increasing numbers to experience our beautiful islands. Some tourists come here both to experience and at the same time give something back. For five years, 100 foreign volunteers and fifty Faroese have each year worked together for two days on various projects around the country to maintain old village paths, which were essential before roads were built between villages, signage, and other things, making it easier to walk and find one's way between villages. The event will take place again this May, but last spring a television crew was present and followed a group of people from many different countries who were maintaining the path up to our highest mountain, Slættaratindur. Another group repaired the old Gásadalur path, which is still much used, even though there is now a tunnel to Gásadalur.
